Before the Coast Guard, there was the United States Life-Saving Service.
Based on the true 1913 wreck of the SS Rosecrans, 33 Lost follows Inspector Jack Quinn, ordered to investigate the legendary Captain Oscar Wicklund, the man who once saved his life, and Alexandra Vance, an oil company claims representative whose own husband vanished at sea without explanation.
As surviving sailors testify to a night of howling gales, tumultuous seas, missed navigation lights, dead phone lines, and capsizing lifeboats, Quinn must decide whether loyalty and truth can coexist, while Vance uncovers a darker story: her own employer may have sent a ship to sea already broken.
Told through a cappella sea shanties and a bare-stage ensemble conjuring storm, wreck, and rescue from rope and cloth, the play builds toward the real, extraordinary climax — sixteen surfmen risking everything, twice capsized, refusing to quit — and asks what the living owe the dead when the truth can't bring anyone home.
