When President Abraham Lincoln was shot in a private box of Ford's 10th Street Theatre on April 14, 1865, there were forty-six actors, technicians, and theatre staff present. Of those, more than a third were aged 21 and younger, including theatre manager Harry Ford and up-and-coming young actress Jennie Gourlay, whose debut as a leading lady was slated for the following night...and never happened.

Told through scenes, monologues, and a youth chorus, We Heard the Shot gives a glimpse into the lives of many of these young performers and how the action of John Wilkes Booth not only affected their lives that night but for years to come. Drawing largely from Thomas Bogar's extensively-researched book Backstage at the Lincoln Assassination, every character is based on a real historical persona, allowing student performers to also lean in to some historical research to learn about their theatrical counterparts from 150 years ago.
